sleepy time tip: recipe hunting

IMG_1985 With the excitement of fall in the air and anticipation of all things pumpkin, squash, and simmering for hours, I've introduced the girls to recipe hunting.

Recipe hunting means first gathering my most colorful, picture-filled recipe books. (My favorites are my Better Homes and Garden Annual Recipes.  You can buy them new or used for cheap on Amazon!)

Recipe books outlined month by month or by season work the best.

I plant a cookbook on my child's lap open to the current month or season of recipes.  I have each of my girls pick a few meals and accompanying desserts or festive treats they'll help me in the kitchen with.

Caroline's picks:  cheddar apple soup and carmel apples

Johanna's picks: s'mores and blueberry pie--we're still working on the meal part!

It is a perfect relaxing activity that gets them involved with the family menu and our family, as a whole, excited about fall's harvest.

What are your favorite fall dinners and desserts your family anticipates?
